Leadership Long Beach
By Stella Ursua - President, Green Education
“Leadership is lifting a person’s
vision to higher sights, the raising of
a person’s performance to a higher standard,
the building of a personality
beyond its normal limitations.”
Peter F. Drucker, attributed,
The Fundamentals of Leadership
January 29th, 2013 – It is the midway point for the Leadership Long Beach Class of 2013, and I am struck by the opportunities that the program provides, both for me and for the community. Not only do we have a chance to contribute meaningful and lasting improvements to our city, but I have a chance to engage residents in redefining our vision for a sustainable Long Beach as well.
I have spent the majority of my life in the role of trainer, educator, director and organizer, and I strongly believe that the majority of people crave the chance to learn and be part of movements that help to improve the lives of their families and communities. Whether it is volunteering with a non-profit or political organization, or a PTA or environmental organization, our fellow citizens want to be engaged and feel connected, and feel like they are making a difference and that is what Leadership Long Beach is all about!
In the next few months, my Leadership Long Beach (LLB) classmates and I, just like the leaders that came before us, will design and launch programs that challenge our leadership skills. For me personally, it is a chance to help build a central vehicle for sustainability awareness that fully engages residents to make sustainability-focused choices at home, work and play.
Just as important, it is a chance to put into practice LLB principles that serve as a foundation for our work; principles like: personal responsibility, to ensure future residents live in sustainable communities; courage and commitment, to challenge my neighbors to minimize their footprint on the environment; and vision and service, to passionately engage people in this effort toward a healthier community and world.
LBB is a defining moment for the participants of Class of 2013, and I cannot wait to be part of the “best class ever.” Watch out, Long Beach!
(Founded in 1989, Leadership Long Beach offers principled leadership programs by educating and engaging adult and youth leaders on issues important to the city’s future and sustainability.
