Leadership Long Beach
By Anna Jimenez - Director of Finance and Operations at Westerly School
March 26th, 2013 – Five years ago I considered myself a tourist of the City of Long Beach. Although I was born and raised in Southern California, I had a surface-level understanding of the city. In reality, the Shoreline Village area was the only location I had really ever been exposed to. Then I started my position at Westerly School and it didn’t take long for my eyes to be opened to opportunities.
As I familiarized myself with the city I learned about a program that immerses diverse groups of city leaders into the inner workings of Long Beach. Leadership Long Beach is a 10-month program that delves into different aspects of the community through interactive classes and engaging speakers. It is almost guaranteed that you will learn something new during this time, whether you are new to the city or your family has been here for generations. The best thing you will find is a community of like-minded individuals and leaders in their own right. What you can’t ignore is a program that always looks to engage its members and ignite their passion for making Long Beach a great place to live and work.
Today, my view of Long Beach has developed and grown through the guidance of the program. Leadership Long Beach opened its arms to me and has shown me the way ever since. I credit all the city leaders, alumni and volunteers who dedicate their time to speaking with us about programs and protocols. It really makes a difference. Take it from the girl who not too long ago had no idea what Retro Row or the College Promise was; or how having an elected City Auditor, versus an appointed one, benefits the citizens of the city. Now I’m equipped with the tools and knowledge I need to make informed decisions and be an active participant of this vibrant city.
Get to know the City of Long Beach in an utmost intimate way. Learn about its history, successes, challenges and dreams. Talk with people who live and breathe it every day in every manner. And along the way, get to know people that you would never meet otherwise. They are all waiting to show you the way.
(Founded in 1989, Leadership Long Beach offers principled leadership programs by educating and engaging adult and youth leaders on issues important to the city’s future and sustainability.
