Leadership Long Beach
By Ryan Rayburn - National Multi Housing Group Marcus & Millichap Long Beach
April 9th, 2013 – My Leadership Long Beach journey began last June when I was invited to attend the “Community Project Presentations” for the class of 2012. Not knowing what to expect, I was curious to learn more about a program that has such a positive impact on people in the community.
I initially heard about Leadership Long Beach from my sister who graduated in the class of 2002. During my sister’s involvement, I never inquired about the process nor did I receive any details about the group itself, but I knew she enjoyed her participation. Her positive experience along with my own curiosity helped me decide to attend the ceremony and take my first steps towards becoming a better leader and the chance to give back to my community.Growing up in Long Beach, I had the opportunity to attended Lowell, Rogers, Wilson, LBCC, and then graduated from CSULB. Having the chance to grow up in such a close knit community gave me specific insight to the city and I became somewhat of an expert amongst friends and colleagues. I truly enjoy the quality of life that Long Beach has to offer, but I am also aware of the diverse issues that our city faces. I was attracted to Leadership Long Beach because of a chance to serve the greater community and increase my knowledge about Long Beach politics. I also appreciate the opportunity to be introduced to a diverse group of people from various backgrounds who are all looking to improve their leadership skills and make Long Beach a better place in whole.
Fast forward 10 months and I can honestly say that my journey has begun. So far I have been part of the formal interview process, Big Bear retreat, police/ fire department ride-along, principal for the day and monthly classes that are held throughout the city. I am committed to being present in each activity, I believe in the principles of leadership, and I recognize the current issues pertaining to the city. I now have the vision, resources, and support from my classmates to make significant changes for the betterment of the city. This is what Leadership Long Beach has done for me and I strongly suggest that you take your first step and start your own journey.
