Leadership Long Beach
By Jeff Williams, Executive Director,
LLBI Class of 2008
December 17th, 2013 – Over the past 12 months, Leadership Long Beach alumni from throughout our organization’s 25-year history have written this column, telling their stories of leadership, how the Leadership Long Beach program impacted them and how they strive to make a positive difference in our community every day.
The stories came from alumni who represent the diversity of our community – in every way, meaning not just age, race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., but also by representing all parts of our community including the public sector, private sector and nonprofit sector, from Downtown to West Long Beach to North Long Beach to the East Side and The Shore.
F&M Bank President Henry Walker, School Board member Felton Williams, former Councilwoman Tonia Reyes-Uranga, Chamber President Randy Gordon, Arts Council Executive Director John Glaza, leaders from the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Transit, City of Long Beach, MoLAA, community organizers and small business owners – all have shared this space and told a little of their story.
And while each writer is very different, they all have two things in common: they are leaders and they love Long Beach!
What makes them leaders? Well, the simple fact that at some point in their career they made the decision to join Leadership Long Beach showed leadership. Because on some level, that is what leadership is . . . a willingness to step forward, to stand up, to go outside of your comfort zone and decide to do something about the status quo.
So, to all of our LLB alumni out there – Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do to make Long Beach the best Long Beach it can be!
And to those of you who might be interested, we invite you to join us. Join the legacy of 1,000 leaders, 100+ community service projects and 25 years of serving Long Beach. It all starts with a decision to step forward. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more.
Finally, this column came about as a way to commemorate our 25th “Silver” Anniversary. We wish to give a big ‘Thank You!’ to the Long Beach Business Journal for giving us this opportunity to tell our stories.
(Founded in 1989, Leadership Long Beach offers principled leadership programs by educating and engaging adult and youth leaders on issues important to the city’s future and sustainability.
