May 7, 2013 – On April 1, Jose Cordon (right) and Jose “Dire” Mercado together opened their first retail store, affectionately named 1897LB in homage to the year their beloved city was incorporated. Mercado and Cordon set out to open a store with clothing and fashion items in the genre of “street wear” for infants to adults. According to the co-owners, the East Village Arts District was the right place to open 1897LB because they feel strongly that the community and those that frequent it would embrace their sense of design and artistic style. Local brands carried by 1897LB include Mercado’s line Long Beach Homegrown, and Children of the Stork, a specialty children’s clothing line founded by Jose and Alexandria Cordon in 2010. 1897LB also stocks Santa Cruz, Independent, Creature, Sourpuss, Little Fit and the 1897LB shop brand. The retail store is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, call 562/270-4380 or e-mail 1897LB@gmail.com.
