May 7, 2013 – Construction on the new Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse in Downtown Long Beach is nearing completion. Upon opening, it will replace the prior Long Beach Courthouse located around the corner on Ocean Boulevard. Under the ownership of the Judicial Council of California, the structure will house 31 courtrooms as well as below-grade secure inmate transfer and detention facilities. The public area of the building features an atrium and a secure courtyard. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County will occupy 80 percent of its space. According to Stephen Reinstein, chief executive officer of developer Long Beach Judicial Partners LLC, construction on the courthouse is about 90 percent complete. Finishing touches such as flooring and furniture installation are being applied inside. Completion is scheduled for fall 2013. (Photograph by the Business Journal’s Thomas McConville)
