LBCC Receives $3 Million Federal Grant For STEM
The U.S. Department of Education awarded Long Beach City College (LBCC) a $3 million grant to fund the college’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines for low-income and Latinx students, the college announced yesterday. The grant was awarded in August and will be distributed to the college over the course of five years. The college is using the funding to create the DESTINO (Developing Engaging STEM Through Innovative New Opportunities) program to support historically underrepresented students in STEM education. Funds will go toward hiring faculty and staff for the Science Resource Center, hiring a STEM counselor and academic support staff, hosting a summer STEM program to help local high school grads transition to LBCC, hosting STEM outreach events and conducting financial literacy workshops.
City Of Signal Hill Appoints New Deputy City Manager
Yesterday, the City of Signal Hill announced the appointment of Scott Charney as its new deputy city manager, effective November 2. Charney, who previously served as the city’s community development director, is replacing Hannah Shin-Heydorn, who was recently promoted to city manager. Charney began working with the City of Signal Hill in 1989. While working for the community development department, Charney contributed to the approval of various developments, including the Signal Hill Gateway Center, the expansion of the Signal Hill Auto Center, multiple housing developments and other projects. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Redlands.
Billie Jean King To Serve As Co-Chair For Library Campaign
The Long Beach Public Library Foundation announced this month that tennis legend and activist Billie Jean King will serve as honorary co-chair of the foundation’s New Main Campaign alongside Mayor Robert Garcia. The campaign is a fundraiser for the new Billie Jean King Main Library and will support programs, technology and various enhancements at the facility, according to the foundation. The New Main Campaign has raised $2.1 million as of October 18. The funds will allow patrons to have access to a multitude of resources, including laptops, library kiosks, printers and more. The campaign will continue through the end of the library’s first full year of service. The Billie Jean King Main Library opened on September 21.
Development Services To Host Community Resource Fair
In honor of National Community Planning Month, Long Beach Development Services is hosting a community resource fair tomorrow, October 26, from 10 a.m. to noon at Whaley Park, 5620 E. Atherton St. In collaboration with the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine, the event will feature resources and activities from various city departments, music, a photobooth, giveaways, light refreshments and more.
