Moments ago, the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters provided the Business Journal with an updated vote count that appears to make Jeannine Pearce the winner of the 2nd District seat on the Long Beach City Council.

While there remain several hundred more ballots to count, according to Aaron Nevarez of the registrar’s office, today’s count of 2,602 additional votes gives Pearce a total of 4,860 votes to Eric Gray’s 4,670. The remaining votes should be counted by this Friday, but Gray would need to receive about 75% of the remaining votes to pass Pearce, which is highly unlikely.

Nevarez said that the voter turnout in the 2nd District stands at 33.7%.

If the results stand, Pearce will be sworn into office on July 19 for a four-year term. She would replace current councilmember and vice mayor, Suja Lowenthal, who is termed out. Lowenthal supported Pearce as her successor.
